How to read the lunar calendar
Phase and illumination. New moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter are exact moments, so the table gives each one a time. On other days you see the phase and the lit share of the Moon's disk at noon Eastern Time.
Moon sign. The Moon moves through a zodiac sign in about two and a half days. When it enters the next sign, the table shows the time of that ingress.
Void of course. The stretch between the Moon's last exact major aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition) to the Sun or a planet out to Pluto and its entry into the next sign. Tradition advises against starting important things in these hours.
Every phase with exact times: Moon phases, full moon calendar and new moon dates. More guides in the astrology library; for the Moon in your own chart, build a free birth chart in the app.
Frequently asked questions
What sign is the Moon in today?
On November 4, 2026 the Moon is in Virgo. Its phase is waning crescent, 21% illuminated at noon Eastern Time.
What does void of course mean?
The Moon is void of course from its last exact major aspect to the Sun or a planet until it enters the next sign. It can last minutes or more than a day. By tradition you avoid starting new projects, signing contracts or making big purchases in these hours and use them for routine work and rest instead.
How often does the Moon change signs?
About every two and a half days, so it goes through all twelve signs in roughly 27.3 days. The exact time of each ingress is in the monthly tables, in Eastern Time.
Why are the times in Eastern Time?
This calendar is made for the US, so every date and time is Eastern Time (New York), with UTC where exact moments are listed. On November 1, 2026, clocks fall back one hour at 2:00 AM (EDT, UTC−4, becomes EST, UTC−5), so this day has 25 hours. On March 14, 2027, clocks spring forward one hour at 2:00 AM (EST, UTC−5, becomes EDT, UTC−4), so this day has 23 hours. On November 7, 2027, clocks fall back one hour at 2:00 AM (EDT, UTC−4, becomes EST, UTC−5), so this day has 25 hours. The Moon's phase and sign change at the same instant everywhere; only the clock time and sometimes the date differ in other zones.
Is the lunar calendar the same as the moon gardening calendar?
They use the same phases and signs. The planting by the Moon calendar adds the traditional gardening rules on top: which days suit sowing, root crops, pruning or harvesting, and which days are rest days.
