What a new moon is
New moon is the moment when the Moon and the Sun share the same ecliptic longitude, as seen from the center of the Earth. The Moon then passes between Earth and the Sun with its dark side toward you, so there is nothing to see. The lunar cycle starts at this moment, and about 29.5 days later the next new moon begins a new one.
How the times are calculated
Astrodamus finds each new moon with Swiss Ephemeris and rounds it to the minute. The Moon's sign is the tropical zodiac sign at that moment; the Sun is in the same sign, because the two are lined up. Solar eclipses are found with the same engine and shown next to the new moon they fall on.
A phase happens at the same instant for everyone, but your clock shows a different hour and sometimes a different date. A full moon at 11:00 PM Eastern Time is 8:00 PM in Los Angeles on the same date and already the next date in UTC and in Europe. That is why a calendar made for London or Moscow can disagree with this one by a day. All dates on this page are Eastern Time dates.

Frequently asked questions
When is the next new moon?
On November 9, 2026, at 2:02 AM ET (07:02 UTC), with the Moon in Scorpio. After that: December 8, 2026 in Sagittarius and January 7, 2027 in Capricorn.
Can you see the new moon?
No. At new moon the Moon is close to the Sun in the sky and its lit side faces away from Earth, so it is hidden in the daylight glare. The first thin crescent usually appears low in the west after sunset one or two days later.
How many new moons are there in 2026?
12 new moons in 2026 and 13 in 2027, counted by Eastern Time dates.
Is there a solar eclipse at every new moon?
No. The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5° to Earth's orbit, so a solar eclipse happens only when a new moon falls near one of the two points where the orbits cross. In 2026–2027 that gives an annular solar eclipse on February 17, 2026, a total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, an annular solar eclipse on February 6, 2027, a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027.
Why does the new moon time differ between sources?
The new moon is one instant for the whole planet; sources simply show it in different time zones. Many lists use UTC, so a new moon late in the evening Eastern Time can appear there under the next date. Here every date and time is Eastern Time, with UTC in brackets.
What is the new moon good for in astrology?
Tradition treats the new moon as the start of the lunar cycle. It is a common time to set intentions and make plans, and the first days of the waxing Moon after it are a common time to start new projects. This is a tradition, not a guarantee of results.
