Rising Sign Calculator
Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born. Enter your birth date, time and city below and this free calculator shows your rising sign and its degree right on this page, calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris.
What your rising sign means
Astrologers read the rising sign as your manner of meeting the world: the first impression you make, the way you start things and the style you fall back on when a situation is new. The Sun sign describes what drives you; the rising sign describes the doorway people walk through to reach it.
The Ascendant is also the starting point of the houses. Its degree marks the cusp of the first house, and every other house follows from it, so the rising sign decides which areas of life each planet in your chart falls into.
Why the exact birth time matters
The sky turns a full circle in a day, so the Ascendant passes through all twelve signs in about 24 hours: roughly one sign every two hours. Some signs rise faster than others, and far from the equator the difference is large. A birth time that is off by 15 minutes can move the Ascendant by several degrees and sometimes into the next sign.
The most reliable source is an official record. In the US, the long-form birth certificate from your state's vital records office usually lists the time; hospital records and a family baby book are the next best options. A time rounded to the hour is worth double-checking.
Sun, Moon and rising: your big three
Most chart readings start with three placements. The Sun sign is your core purpose, the Moon sign your emotional needs, and the rising sign your outward style. Two people with the same Sun sign can come across very differently because their rising signs differ. To see all three together with the planets, houses and aspects, open your free birth chart.
Example: Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II was born on 04/21/1926 at 2:40 AM in London. British Summer Time had started three days earlier, on 04/18/1926, so the clock time equals 1:40 AM Greenwich time. Enter those details and the calculator returns Capricorn rising at about 21°. For her exact birthplace on Bruton Street in Mayfair the Ascendant is 21°23′ Capricorn; the London city center gives a value two minutes of arc higher, which shows how precise the calculation is.
The calculator applies historical time zones and daylight saving time on its own, so you only need the local clock time written on the birth record.
How the calculation works
Your local birth time is converted to Universal Time with the time zone database, including past daylight saving rules. The Swiss Ephemeris then finds the degree of the zodiac crossing the eastern horizon at your birthplace at that moment. The result uses the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western astrology, and matches the Ascendant in the Astrodamus app to the minute of arc.
What each rising sign means
Aries rising
You meet life head-on. People notice your energy and speed before anything else, and you tend to act first and reflect later. New situations wake you up rather than make you nervous. The lesson of this Ascendant is patience: letting others catch up and finishing what you start with the same fire you began it.
Taurus rising
You come across as calm, steady and grounded, someone who will not be rushed. Comfort, good food and beautiful surroundings matter to you, and you build trust slowly but keep it for a long time. Change can feel unwelcome at first. Your strength is reliability; the growth point is staying open when plans shift.
Gemini rising
You open with curiosity and conversation. People see you as quick, witty and easy to talk to, and you pick up information and contacts wherever you go. Boredom is your real enemy, so you like variety and keep several projects going. Your task is to choose a few threads and follow them all the way through.
Cancer rising
You read a room by its mood and approach people with care. Others often feel looked after around you, even when they have just met you. You protect yourself until you feel safe, then open up warmly. Home and close people are your anchor. The growth point is speaking your needs plainly instead of hoping they are guessed.
Leo rising
You enter with presence. Even when you feel shy, people notice you, and you have a natural sense of style and occasion. Generosity and pride go together in this Ascendant: you give a lot and want your effort to be seen. You do best when you lead with warmth and let others share the spotlight.
Virgo rising
You come across as attentive, modest and capable, the person who notices what needs fixing. You like to understand how things work and prefer useful action to big talk. Others trust your judgment on details. Your challenge is self-criticism: the standards you set are high, and they apply to you most of all.
Libra rising
You approach people with charm and tact, and you have an instinct for fairness and balance. First impressions of you are usually pleasant: polite, attractive, easy to be around. You think in terms of partnership and may weigh options for a long time. Your growth is in making a decision even when someone might disagree.
Scorpio rising
You give an impression of depth and intensity, and people often sense there is more going on than you show. You observe before you trust and notice what others try to hide. Loyalty runs deep once earned. This Ascendant learns to let people in gradually and to use its focus for renewal rather than control.
Sagittarius rising
You meet the world with optimism and a sense of adventure. People see you as frank, friendly and restless, someone who is always planning the next trip, course or big idea. You need room to move and dislike being fenced in. Your gift is inspiring others; the lesson is following through on the details.
Capricorn rising
You come across as composed, serious and capable beyond your years. You size up a situation, set a goal and work toward it step by step. People rely on you, sometimes more than you would like. Responsibility comes naturally. This Ascendant often grows lighter with age, learning that rest and play are part of the plan.
Aquarius rising
You show up as original, independent and a little hard to predict. Friendship and ideas matter to you, and you are at ease with people from every background. You would rather question a rule than follow it blindly. Your challenge is closeness: staying warm and present with individuals, not only with causes and groups.
Pisces rising
You come across as gentle, imaginative and quietly perceptive. You pick up on other people's feelings quickly and often adapt to whoever you are with. Art, music and inner life feed you. Clear boundaries are your growth point, so that your sensitivity stays a gift instead of something that wears you out.
Frequently asked questions
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably. The Ascendant changes sign about every two hours, so without a time any of the twelve signs is possible. If you know a rough window, such as early morning, enter both ends of it and see whether the sign stays the same. Astrologers can also narrow the time down from life events, a technique called rectification.
Is the rising sign more important than the Sun sign?
Neither is more important; they describe different things. The Sun sign shows your core motivation, and the rising sign shows how you engage with the world and how others first see you. Many astrologers read the Ascendant and its ruling planet as the frame for the whole chart.
Why do other websites show a different rising sign?
The usual causes are a wrong time zone or daylight saving offset, a city with similar name in another state or country, or a sidereal zodiac instead of the tropical one. Check that the city and time match your birth record. This calculator uses historical time zone rules and the tropical zodiac.
Does my rising sign change during my life?
Your natal rising sign stays the same for life. Astrologers also look at charts that move: the progressed Ascendant shifts slowly over the years, and each birthday brings a new solar return chart with its own rising sign for the year ahead.
What is the degree of the Ascendant used for?
The degree sets the cusp of the first house and with it the layout of all twelve houses. It also tells you when transiting planets cross your Ascendant, and which planets in your chart or a partner's chart form close aspects to it.
